How long have you lived in the Willamette Valley?

I was born in Salem and never left. The PNW is home! This is where I fell in love, had children and built my career. I love that in an hours drive, I can be at the coast, the mountains or the big city.

What would you sing at Karaoke Night?

By the time you reach the age of 5, you no longer want to hear my singing voice. I am sure I could make the dogs howl. But I do have my very own Karaoke time in my car . I roll up the windows, blast the music and sing at the top of my lungs.

What was your first job?

My very first job was cleaning the paint room at a Childcare Center located close to my high school. I would walk there everyday after school. I absolutely loved it. It was the beginning of a 20 year career in Child Development.

Who knows you the very best?

Who knows me best.... That would definitely be my husband. We started dating in high school and never looked back. I mean we have grown and matured in the last 23 years and life is a bit different then 1996. We do life well together, through all the ups and downs.

What keeps you awake at night?

My 3 year old is what keeps me up at night Most nights start with beautiful sleep. I fall asleep very quickly at night (my husband is always so jealous), but every night around Midnight, I wake to a 3 year old crawling into my bed. From the point forward, I have feel in my back, slaps in the face and no covers. Would I want it to be any different? No! She is our last baby and as far as I am concerned, she can crawl into our bed until she leaves for college.

What shows are you into?

I am currently in love with "Doctor" shows. Greys, New Amsterdam, Night Shift.....

What does your ideal weekend look like?

I love the weekends! My ideal weekend starts with "family Pizza and Movie night" on Friday, A beautiful hike and picnic on Saturday, Coffee date on Sunday morning with my dad and sister and ending it all with a BBQ and games with friends on Sunday evening. As you can see, down time is hard for me.

What does “self care” look like to you?

Oh selfcare.... We all could use a little more of that in our lives. Selfcare to me, is a HOT bubble bath, a steaming cup of coffee and a book.

How do you like your coffee?

Coffee is my best friend<3 Well besides my sisters and Annie! I love my coffee warm on a cold day and iced on a hot days. I do enjoy the lovely over sweetened foofy drinks from coffee shops, but I prefer a good ole brewed coffee with vanilla creamer on most days.

Why did you become a doula?

Why did I become a doula!?! The question of the hour. I have been in some care giving role my whole life. I am the oldest of 4 sisters. I took that role very seriously. I "mothered" those girls far more than they probably wanted me to at times. I never wanted them to feel alone or unheard, Don't get me wrong, we fought like cats and dogs, but I love those girls. As a preschool teacher and an infant room teacher, I care for others peoples children in loving and unbiased way. I validated and reassured parents everyday as the said goodbye and walked out the door. One day a friend of mine asked if I would support her and her husband at the birth of their second baby. I had never witness a birth and was a little unsure of what to expect. I wasn't really sure what my role would be on that day, but I said yes! Watching this woman's strength and confidence was electrifying. Supporting her came as second nature. I knew I was meant to do this. I was a doula in so many aspects of my life. Supporting people with out bias and judgment is what I do. Now lets add the intensity and vulnerablity of labor and birth. Boom! Melissa became a doula!
